| The Nebraska Republican Party is showing a startling new level of desperation in its efforts to force the Nebraska Legislature to change the state's electoral college vote during the 2012 legislative session. At the September meeting of its State Central Committee, a resolution is being proposed that would block any support for State Senators who vote against changing the casting of Nebraska's electoral college votes to "winner-take-all."
Objective Conservative recently published the language of this resolution:
Whereas Nebraska is one of only two states that award electoral votes based on the presidential winner of congressional districts,....
Whereas it is of the highest priority and interest to the Nebraska Republican Party and the citizens of Nebraska that the state returns to a "winner-takes-all" electoral vote plan,
Whereas the Nebraska Republican Party supports legislation that returns the state to the "winner-takes-all" basis,
And, whereas the Nebraska Republican Party believes that the "winner-takes-all" issue is a litmus test for those who would claim to be Republicans and seek the support of the Nebraska Republican Party,
Be it resolved that the Nebraska Republican Party will not support in any manner, financial or otherwise, any state senator who opposes the return of the state to the "winner-takes-all" electoral vote plan either by failing to vote for such in committee or on the floor of the legislature.
Earlier this year, the "winner-take-all" bill failed to advance from the Legislature's Government, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee after its members deadlocked on a 4-4 vote. This resolution is clearly a message to State Senator Paul Schumacher of Columbus - the lone Republican on that committee to oppose the legislation. Schumacher is also a member of the NEGOP's State Central Committee. That could certainly add an element of drama to their next meeting.
But, the real story here is whether the Nebraska Republican Party will really go to such extreme lengths injecting raw partisanship into the Legislature. This resolution is intended to squelch any show of independence. It demands that State Senators sacrifice their personal principles and the best interests of the state as a demonstration of loyalty to party before all else. That's a very extreme position and a dangerous proposition - one that threatens the promise of our state constitution to the people of Nebraska and the foundation on which our state government is built.
Of course, as NNN noted earlier this year, Schumacher isn't alone among Republican State Senators who've said "winner-take-all" is wrong for Nebraska. He's just the only one who's had to cast that vote. But, others are being threatened by this strong-arm tactic and could suffer the consequences if they dared to stand up to their party in the 2012 legislative session.
Ultimately, this resolution is not just a threat to the political careers of a few State Senators but to every citizen of our state. There's no denying that the Republican Party exerts incredible power and influence over our state government. This resolution might allow the NEGOP to flex its muscles and abuse that power. But, this would be a show of weakness - not of strength - and a betrayal of an independence held dear by Nebraskans of every political stripe. |
