  • Nebraska GOP Could Excommunicate State Senators Who Oppose Electoral College Takeover

    by: Kyle Michaelis

Wed Sep 07, 2011 at 20:56:12 PM CDT

The Nebraska Republican Party is showing a startling new level of desperation in its efforts to force the Nebraska Legislature to change the state's electoral college vote during the 2012 legislative session.  At the September meeting of its State Central Committee, a resolution is being proposed that would block any support for State Senators who vote against changing the casting of Nebraska's electoral college votes to "winner-take-all."

Objective Conservative recently published the language of this resolution:

Whereas Nebraska is one of only two states that award electoral votes based on the presidential winner of congressional districts,....

Whereas it is of the highest priority and interest to the Nebraska Republican Party and the citizens of Nebraska that the state returns to a "winner-takes-all" electoral vote plan,

Whereas the Nebraska Republican Party supports legislation that returns the state to the "winner-takes-all" basis,

And, whereas the Nebraska Republican Party believes that the "winner-takes-all" issue is a litmus test for those who would claim to be Republicans and seek the support of the Nebraska Republican Party,

Be it resolved that the Nebraska Republican Party will not support in any manner, financial or otherwise, any state senator who opposes the return of the state to the "winner-takes-all" electoral vote plan either by failing to vote for such in committee or on the floor of the legislature.

Earlier this year, the "winner-take-all" bill failed to advance from the Legislature's Government, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee after its members deadlocked on a 4-4 vote.  This resolution is clearly a message to State Senator Paul Schumacher of Columbus - the lone Republican on that committee to oppose the legislation.  Schumacher is also a member of the NEGOP's State Central Committee. That could certainly add an element of drama to their next meeting.

But, the real story here is whether the Nebraska Republican Party will really go to such extreme lengths injecting raw partisanship into the Legislature.  This resolution is intended to squelch any show of independence.  It demands that State Senators sacrifice their personal principles and the best interests of the state as a demonstration of loyalty to party before all else.  That's a very extreme position and a dangerous proposition - one that threatens the promise of our state constitution to the people of Nebraska and the foundation on which our state government is built.

Of course, as NNN noted earlier this year, Schumacher isn't alone among Republican State Senators who've said "winner-take-all" is wrong for Nebraska.  He's just the only one who's had to cast that vote.  But, others are being threatened by this strong-arm tactic and could suffer the consequences if they dared to stand up to their party in the 2012 legislative session.

Ultimately, this resolution is not just a threat to the political careers of a few State Senators but to every citizen of our state.  There's no denying that the Republican Party exerts incredible power and influence over our state government.  This resolution might allow the NEGOP to flex its muscles and abuse that power. But, this would be a show of weakness - not of strength - and a betrayal of an independence held dear by Nebraskans of every political stripe.

    Sore loser bill (0.00 / 0)
The bill to revert to a winner take all system in Nebraska is a sore loser bill.  The Nebraska GOP still hasn't gotten over McCain's loss to Obama in CD-02 in 2008.  The GOP's support for a winner take all law tells me that they believe Obama will carry CD-02 again in 2012.

    Excommunicate Michaelis, McGill, Conrad! (0.00 / 0)
The ones who should be excommunicated are Catholics like Kyle Michaelis, Amanda McGill, Danielle Conrad for their very public and open dissent from their faith's definitive teaching on life issues.

I wish Bishop Fabian would at the very least give them a warning: their eternal souls are in danger due to their pro-abortion, pro-homosexuality, pro-embryonic stem cell destruction support!

If they were claiming to work for Coke, yet worked 24-hours a day promoting Pepsi, they would have fired a long, long time ago!

Wake up Democrats, when you support such stances, you are supporting mortal sin, evil and you are responsible.

Don't worry, Faustina13. You're not going to Hell for this, because there isn't one. It's all imaginary, just like Heaven. Just like God.

However, you should still try to do the right thing. And the right thing is to look at this stuff logically, recognizing that it's not black and white, but shades of gray.

Whether a fetus is considered a human being or not, it's mother is always a human being. A woman doesn't lose her rights just because she has a fetus inside her.

Of course, when it comes to religion, you can believe whatever loony thing you want. What you can't do is force your own religious beliefs on everyone else. That's why we have the separation of church and state in this country.

    Faustina-

You do the Church a grave disservice by relying on it to silence political discourse and suppress free speech.  I hope readers will refrain from judging Catholicism by its most reactionary element - which you are only too happy to exemplify.

On a separate note, I'll try to avoid Catholic religious terminology in future diaries.  It's not worth inviting your repetition of these same tired "arguments" over and over again.

bbjamfan, lisa - you are waaaayyyy off (0.00 / 0)
    To begin with,

    I will just stratch the surface of some of my background. Why? Because it proves that many of the stereotypes that anti-lifers spread is that pro-lifers;

    a. are all right-wing nuts
    b. all Democrats
    c. do not care about the poor

You see my dear friends, I was once like you! I used to think, all those pro-lifers only care about the child in the womb and then once its outside, they don't care. It is believing in this myth that helps ease own our troubled conscience, because even though that myth is so persuasive, deep down inside, you still know that it is still wrong to kill an innocent, defenseless human life at its earliest, most vulnerable stages. This conscience stings, and you want to get rid of it, so you lash out in anger and point the finger at the other side and try to paint them in the worst possible light, in order to try in vain to silence your conscience.

    shattering your illusions (0.00 / 0)
    Here's a little background;

    when I was a junior in high school, i organized;
    - an anti-apartheid workshop, "teach-in"
    - organized a drive to send supplies to Mozambique
    - volunteered at the Francis House homeless shelter once a week for a year

when I was a senior in high school, I
    - spoke out against prejudice in my school
    - spoke out against US policy in Central America to my teachers
    - helped with various porjects to assist the homeless

    following high school, I

became an active member of Nebraskans for Peace, Youth for Peace, worked on paid staff at the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker soup kitchen, attended a rally with featured the late Cesar Chavez, engaged in civil disobiedence at Offutt, etc.

I organized local anti-war groups, lead voter registration drives, became a leader in local Democrat party activiities, etc. Helped get a public skatepark, helped get candidates elected, etc.

I worked side by side and learned from local activists that you probably never even heard of; Bill and Marge Farmer, Dolores Goodlet, Rowena Moore, Al Rodriquez, etc.

Believe me, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I will put my progressive activist credentials and body of work up against anyone. And yeah, Jane Kleeb, I had the conviction to actually get arrested for the cause. (anti-Gulf war)

    Abortion/Death Penalty (0.00 / 0)
    Attention Catholics:

    THE DIFFERNCE BETWEEN ABORTION AND THE DEATH PENALTY;

Abortion is always an intrinsic evil, always a grave mortal sin. Never allowed under any circumstance. As Catholics, you can not be "pro-choice" and say you are following Catholic teaching.

The Church has stated that the death penalty is in rare and unique circumstances, a right of the state to exercise. Over the years, the Church has become increasing critical of all and any use of the death penalty. In reality, it is basically opposed to capital punishment, except with the most extreme rarest of rare occasions where it can be proven that the criminal poses a threat to other humans by living. In this day and age, that is virtually impossible to prove - with life w/o parole, the chance of rehabilitation, etc. In fact, the late, great, Blessed Pope John Paul II personally intervened to persuade US governors to halt executions. (As well, please remember the powerful example of JPII who went into the prison cell to forgive the man who tried to kill him!)

key things to remember: abortion is the deliberate, intentional killing of an innocent, defenseless human life. The case was made (which I never bought) that the criminal is not innocent, had a chance to defend themselves through years of appeals, poses threats to other prisoners, guards, and society at large if they ever got out.

ps - I have been a member of Nebraskans against the Death Penalty since the mid-1980's. Paul Farrand and his wife, Julie K, are friends of mine and my family.
Funny though, there are a whole lot of anti-death penalty people who love Planned Parenthood, NOW, and making abortion a cherished right.

Challenge to Anti-Death Penalty people on this blog: (0.00 / 0)
    Here's a challenge::

All you anti-capital punishment Democrats who are so outraged at GW Bush's record on the death penalty or Rick Perry, please write back if you also oppose the state-sponsored killing of the innocent through abortion!

    Please sign in....

I'll wait to see the list.....

THe myth (lie) that pro-lifers don't care about the poor (0.00 / 0)
I know many, many pro-lifers personally and from 20 years of activism within the progressive community as well, i would say that both groups care about the care greatly. There are two ways of seeing issues though. Each side could learn from each other.

One myth that I used to believe was that pro-lifers just liked to stand outside the clinic and shout and not do anything about the women struggling.

If you ever took the time to get to meet some of the pro-life movement leaders and rank & file you would be impressed and amazed at their committment to the poor and to women and families.

For everyone of you who believe in the misguidance of Planned Parenthood, there are also others who work night and day to reach out to women, to help to provide training, guidance, financial support, education, etc. to all mothers struggling and to women in general and their families to chose the right path, the more noble path: choose life, choose hope, choose family, marriage, purity, committment

Do Not be fooled by friends, Democrats often try to paint anyone who sees flaws in welfare programs as "uncaring towards the poor".

It is central to Catholic belief to love your neighbor, to love the poor. Just look at examples in Scripture: Lazareth and Dives, "whosoever you do to the least...", etc.

But, the key is: THAT DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN CATHOLICS HAVE TO SUPPORT GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS

The bottom line is: you must be concerned about the plight of the disadvantaged. If you do not, you are in bad shape morally speaking. But, there are a number of ways that people can disagree on how to help the poor best. Blessed are the poor does not mean Blessed is Big Government, despite what Keith Oblerman says.

    Here's an example: (0.00 / 0)
    Here's a perfect example:

All we hear from Democrats is, "help the poor..........by raising taxes to pay for government programs"

If one opposes certain programs Democrats often unfairly brand them as being callous or mean to the poor.

    Let me ask you folks,

How do Government programs like Public Housing work?

    Did it help the poor?
    Did it uplift the poor?

You see, there may have been some positive things about public housing but the case can also be made that public housing didn't work (it wasn't fair, it lead to a culture of crime and dependency, segregated poor people, etc)....

    Programs vs Abortion (0.00 / 0)
A Catholic can not say a candidate who supports supposed anti-poverty programs yet is "pro-choice" is following Catholic teaching more than a candidate who is pro-death penalty and pro-life.

    Why?

    Again,

One can disagree with the effectiveness of a government program yet still have concern for the poor

One can never support the deliberate killing of innocent people. (You can't support someone who believes in terrorism, enthuanasia, embryonic stem cell research, either)

You can never place a government program over the support of enshrining into law a moral evil such as abortion.

    So, bbjamfan, you are mistaken.

I will be happy to meet with you to show you Catholic documents and teachings.

    I am a sinner (0.00 / 0)
I am trying to help you see the light, because you are engaging in some very bad, I would even say morally harming things.

This doesn't make me self-righteous. I have an obligation to tell my brother and my sister who are so publicly promoting abortion and grave sins like that.

Is that judging? If I am judging you personally, your worthiness as a person, deciding whether you "deserve" punishment, etc. then yes, I am sinnining.

But, if I am merely pointing out your mistakes, I am not judging you but actually showing you love and mercy.

Correct your actions, friends. Love the sinner, hate the sin is not judging.

To say someone is judging just because they say you are doing something wrong is judging.

Funny, if someone made a statement that you didn't like, for example against homosexuals, you would immediately jump all over their case I would imagine. Would that be judging them????

I don't know of anyone who is pro-choice that thinks an abortion is something to cheer for.  You should use some of that manic energy of yours to chastise the evil folks who condone state sponsored murder.

I'm a little bored, too. Sorry, but I have to go with Lisa on this one.

You can rattle off your alleged "credentials" all day to prove to me that I don't know you well enough to answer you. Not once, in all of that babble have you acknowledged that YOU DON'T KNOW ME.

I've been there and done that with the pro-life movement. Ask Lisa. She can confirm that. She and I go wayyyyyyyy wayyyyyy back nearly to birth. (a wink for Lisa....;)

Here's what I know about the pro-life movement. When I spent a great deal of time helping a pregnant single mother care for her toddler, the pro-life activists who surrounded me at the time told me I SHOULD STOP HELPING THE GIRL.

All of them. Without exception. People in the organizations. People who spent Saturdays at the clinics. People who spouted the same rhetoric you are spouting on here. These fine upstanding people who care about the poor and care about children and care about life oh so much....their response to someone among them helping a young pregnant single mother was beyond negative. Some went so far to tell me that I was sinning by supporting her.  And that was when I saw them for what they really are. And it isn't something that involves a damn ounce of compassion or decency for living breathing humans or a shred of respect for women.

And I know priests who would have a lot to say to you about actively supporting politicians who advocate the death penalty here in a society where it is not necessary.

I don't know what "pro-lifers" you were with (that one time?) but they do not represent the many people I know personally who are pro-life.

Why don't we set up a meeting?

Let's talk in person, and yes you too Lisa.

Are you basing a negative experience to paint the whole pro-life side that way?

I am willing to introduce to a variety of pro-life people, groups, organizations that work for women, struggling families, the fundamental dignity of human life from conception to natural death.

Why did the "pro-lifers" tell you to stop helping the pregnant woman? Did they ever explain? Maybe they thought you were escorting her into the clinic to kill the baby? What was the full context of the incident? How can you judge everyone because of this one? incident?

The "pro-lifers" you know and not the pro-lifers I know.

Anytime you want, I'd like to introduce you to some of my friends. In exchange you can introduce me to your Planned Parenthood friends?

Its time for us to find common ground and help each other.

let's have the courage to do it!

    [ Parent ]
    Oh, please.... (0.00 / 0)
The world is not black and white. Anyone who is not trolling the web to post anti-abortion rants is not automatically taking women to get abortions or working for Planned Parenthood. I do not personally know anyone affiliated with Planned Parenthood.

And my "credentials" with the pro-life movement and experiences with people involved are not confined to "that one time" as you so oddly decided to put it.

You are quite the hypocrite just in your responses here. You practically scream at me and everyone else not to judge you or your background, not to make assumptions and that to do so isn't fair because we don't know you. But you freely make judgments and assumptions about all of us. Nice.

    You said you know Lisa.
And Lisa is supportive of Planned Parenthood.
As well, it is fair to assume since you are "pro-choice" you know other "pro-choicers" and liberal activists.

I think those are fair assumptions. If I am wrong than I apologize.

On the other hand, it is common for "pro-choicers" are "right wing nuts" or uncaring for women and the poor. My background for one, helps to dispel that myth.

You are either on the side of Life or not Bbjamfan.

From what you have stated it seems that you are "pro-choice" only due to the bad behavior of some "pro-lifers".

But, what about the heart of the matter. Does someone have the right to kill an innocent human being just because it is in its earliest stages?

    Yes or No

Whenever you want to meet, let's arrange it. YOu can bring Lisa, WGC, Kyle, whomever you like. And I would like to extend an invitation to you and all others to come visit me and my friends sometime, I will show you all the efforts we are taking to support life, family, women, etc.

I welcome meeting you and others. R Schommer will be a challenge but he is welcomed also. I am convinced the pro-life cause will eventually win you all over. I am just a poor, inarticulate spokesperson.

    Everyone, please read this.... (0.00 / 0)
"America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men.

It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father's role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts -- a child -- as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters"

And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners.

Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being's entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign." Why, Fausti, I had no idea you thought of me as an extra special hard core case.  I am truly flattered that you hold me in such high regard.

Prior to you posting your inane rants here I'd given the topic of abortion very little thought.  As a male, I was never going to need an abortion, so I considered it largely a women's issue.  I still do.

Your failure is in your approach.  When you're so fanatical about an issue that you can not argue or debate it without passing judgment and looking down on those who disagree with you, you only create more opposition to your position.  I know many people who have left the "pro-life" movement precisely because they no longer wish to be associated with a core group of fanatics who see the entire debate in terms of black and white.  There is a hell of a lot more gray in the world than there is black and white combined.  Your willingness to pass judgment on those who've made one of the most difficult choices they will ever make in their lives is repugnant.  Even to those who might agree with you in principle.

You wouldn't want to introduce me to your friends.  I might have them dancing around a pentagram before it was all over and enjoying a dish of Christian babies sautéed  in a fine wine sauce.

Make your own choices in life and don't pass judgment on others for the choices they make.

You are a really sick person.
I truly hope you get well one day.
I am wishing you the best.
I tried my best to get you to see that abortion is clear cut, its taking an innocent human life. Maybe that is just too shocking or disturbing for you to realize. It's hard I know, I was once like you and believed in all the pro-choice myths and excuses.
I will continue to work even harder now to push forward ideas of peace, social justice, protection of life, and strengthening of the family. And, also allowing religious thought inside the public square, not to dominate, but only to be heard and considered, like other ideas and influences.
    Peace, my brother.

    Apology to R Schommer (and others) (0.00 / 0)
    R Schommer,

I apologize to you personally for some of my past comments. Upon reflection, my language that I used was uncalled for and inappropiate. I personally apologize. I apologize for any personal insults or attacks or any comments that were interrupted as such. That goes to others as well, Lisa, WCG, Bbfam, Rolando, Darwin, etc. (apologies for misspelling your user names also).

You all care very much about your cause. But, I am just as committed on the other side and it absolutely breaks my heart that anyone could support and justify abortion.

I'm not from a different planet people, life is complicated and challenging no doubt. A lot of us face enormous difficulties and are in desperate situations. If that is what you mean by "gray areas", I understand and face them also.

But, as hard as it is, in my sincere and heartful opinion abortion is not the answer, not the solution, and will not make your situation better. I want to spare women from the nightmare and scares of a lifetime, when they falsely choose abortion.

Instead of joining me and millions of others who are working with no fanfare to create a culture of life, where women are lifted up, respected, and treated with dignity, you seem to be out there cheerleading for abortion as a "right".

I think that is so dangerously misguided.

Thank you --- let's think about meeting all together sometime in the future at some pub or restaurant....

This is why you fail (4.00 / 1)
These comments point out why you fail in your "cause":

...it absolutely breaks my heart that anyone could support and justify abortion.

I want to spare women from the nightmare and scares of a lifetime, when they falsely choose abortion.

The first makes an assumption about people who disagree with you and it's the statement of a blind and deaf person who's put others into a narrow category.

The second makes an assumption about any given woman at any given time that makes a choice that you don't agree with, without knowing their situation, their reasons, and assuming that whatever it is that the decision they make, if abortion, is the most harmful to them. Its a blind statement that doesn't acknowledge that you don't have all the answers, don't know all situations, and you, frankly, have no right to any given woman's information.

"He who is without sin, caste the first stone". There's a reason that is a powerful message.

You are all worried about a few cells in a petri dish. I, on the other hand, see the worst that people can do to the living, breathing, born children.

From the 2 year old with bruising covering her back that I had to go out at midnight to see at the ER because the boyfriend didn't like her crying, to the 4 month old baby 3 weeks ago that was covered with so many bruises that she died from the injuries because the boyfriend didn't want to deal with the crying.

From the parents who are so caught up in fighting each other for custody that they use their kids to get at each other and don't see how emotionally abusive their actions are, to the 10 year old that can't seem to learn basic math because his mother used cocaine and heroine on a regular basis while he was in the womb, therefore most likely causing the problems with his learning skills, and as a result he acts up in class all the time and picks fights.

From the 1 1/2 year old covered in scabies and lice because mom was too busy going from place to place to get her latest fix, and who slept 12 straight hours in the ER because it was probably the first good sleep he had in weeks,  to the children you meet who's parents are living in a van in the parking lot because they have no home and got kicked out of the shelter.

These are just a taste of what I have seen, and I have seen much, much worse. I have seen families that represent generations of horrible dysfunction and destruction. And when a young girl who has whored herself out to the local gang, is only 17, has 3 kids with various problems because of drug use during pregnancy, who lives from place to place,  and has found out she's going to have her 4th baby, and who's so strung out on crack she continues having sex to have the drugs, turns to you and says "I think I'm going to get an abortion this time", you find as you look in her eyes, and at the horrible life she's living, that you can't disagree with her.  You find yourself thinking it's best to see what can be done to stop this cycle with the babies already born and the mom who's still a baby herself, so that they maybe have a chance at a normal life.

You may not agree with this, but I don't really care. I'm not asking you to see as I see. I couldn't give a crap what you think and how you insist I must believe as you do, because I never will. I see the real world every day, and life for the sake of life isn't always the right answer.
