  • Lee Terry Is The New Poster Boy For Bad Republican Behavior

    by: Kyle Michaelis

Tue Jul 27, 2010 at 08:17:28 AM CDT

Last week, the story broke of Republican Congressman Lee Terry's "close conversation with a comely lobbyist" at a Washington D.C. bar where he flirtatiously asked her, "Why did you get me so drunk?"  However, what started as a mere illustration of Terry's too-cozy relationship with corporate lobbyists has quickly blossomed into a mini-scandal tainting the entire Republican Party and its hypocritical claims of representing traditional family values.

    Roll Call (subscription-only) reports:

Washington is abuzz with rumors of late-night partying and of House Republicans inappropriately hanging out with female lobbyists.  But not everyone was taken by surprise. Minority Leader John Boehner has been working behind the scenes to address the issue for at least the past year and a half.  The Ohio Republican has had private conversations with several lawmakers asking them to curb their inappropriate behavior....

Despite Boehner's effort to head off a scandal, the issue came to the forefront last week when a conversation that Rep. Lee Terry had with a woman at a GOP watering hole became public.  "Why did you get me so drunk?" the Nebraska Republican asked a women sitting next to him at the Capitol Hill Club during President Barack Obama's June 15 speech about the Gulf Coast oil spill, according to a source who overheard the conversation.....

Boehner said he had spoken to several Members over the past year and a half who, he believed, had done something or came close to doing something unethical....Boehner spokesman Michael Steel declined to comment on the specifics of Boehner's intervention with individual Members.  "We aren't going to comment on rumors, and any conversations Boehner may or may not have had with other Members are private," he said in an e-mail.

Several Republican lobbyists said the Terry incident is part of a larger concern involving a group of House Republicans and lobbyists, including Glenn LeMunyon of the LeMunyon Group, who regularly party with female lobbyists.

"On the Hill, there's a lot of older men that just go home when they're done with votes," said the longtime Capitol Hill Club member who overheard Terry's remark. "Then you have a smaller group that likes to knock back a few and have a good time."

This is now "the Terry incident."  It's attracted enough attention that, according to Roll Call, new identification requirements may be adopted at the Capitol Hill Club to prevent other Congressmen from being caught in similarly compromising positions.  If this were just a one-time instance of Lee 'Good Time' Terry having a little bit too much to drink and a little bit too much fun, that might be appropriate.  But, there's every indication that Terry's behavior is nothing new - from him or an entire culture of overgrown Republican frat boys he's come to represent.

As stated in the followng segment from MSNBC, "Terry is one of several...junior Republican members who have been kind of notorious for being out late at night and partying."

I don't know what's worse - that Terry is still considered a "junior Republican member" after 12 years in Congress or that he's "notorious for being out late at night and partying."  One probably has a lot to do with the other, going a long ways in explaining his weak position and few accomplishments in Washington D.C.

The banner on Terry's campaign website heralds his "Trusted Leadership for Nebraska's Families."  But, trust begins at home.  In Lee Terry's case, it's hard to believe that trust hasn't been broken - with those he loves and with those he represents.  That includes the voters of Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District and - yes - even his fellow Congressional Republicans who've seen their hypocrisy exposed by Terry's hard-partying ways on the peoples' time and on the corporate lobbyists' dime.

Do you think Tom White is a choirboy and will never (or has never) had a drink with a lobbyist?  If this is White's best shot at winning the CD2 seat, he might as well quit now.  Or using your logic Kyle, then I guess Charlie Wrangle is the new poster boy for Bad Democrat Behavior.  He's stolen money, failed to pay taxes, etc., etc., etc.  I assume that means Tom White will do the same as Wrangle if he's elected.  I can put together the 30 second spot storyboard in less than 10 minutes tying Tom White Democrat to Charles Wrangle Democrat.

    Nice try.... (4.00 / 1)
Anything to deflect the story from Lee Terry.  This isn't about being a "choirboy."  I've had a drink or two in my day - Tom White probably has as well.  But, the Republican Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives has certainly never had to intervene because such behavior has gotten out of control.  Has Boehner made a big deal out of nothing?  Has the NY Post?  Has Roll Call?  Have these Republican Lobbyists?  Blame them - not me for simply tying it all together and stating the obvious.

I know, Geo, this is you scrambling to try and deflect from the behavior of your candidate, but give me a break. If anything, this is, yet again, a sign of hypocrisy. Lee Terry likes to pretend he's some paragon of family values and high virtue. But look at the pattern. He get's caught calling out Rep. Jackson for a fight while still on the House floor. He get's caught cussing out a driver when crossing the street. He gets caught submitting statements written by lobbyist and attempting to pass them off as his own. He gets caught flirting and partying with a female lobbyist and it comes out that he's known as one who does this on a regular basis. You know the old saying about where there's smoke there's fire? What does this all say about Lee Terry? I sure don't see any signs of a man who can be held up as any representative of family values. Combine that with the fact the man has done next to nothing in all his years, while breaking the promise to term limit himself......keep scrambling, buddy.

Let's be clear, I don't like Lee Terry...period.  He isn't a true conservative and I'd like to see him lose to a "real one" in the 2012 Republican primary.  That does not mean that I think Tom White would do a better job if elected.  In fact, I'm absolutely convinced he'd be terrible.  My only reason for So What? was/is that whether true or not, IMHO if this is the best the White campaign can do for the upcoming election then White is going to lose.  Let's recap, Tom White is a liberal "tax and spend" Democrat.  That means he should never hold any elective office...period.  End of story.

    Tax and spend? (0.00 / 0)
Really? While this just a talking point your Republican/right wingers have gotten you guys to parrot that is full of all kinds of holes, let's really look at it. If that really were the case, then that means at least Democrats look for ways to pay for their spending. In the mean time, under full Republican control, we saw the national debt (under Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2) explode as your hero's all spent like drunken sailors without once looking for ways to actually pay for their excesses. So do you REALLY want to go down that path? Really? Cause I'll break out the actual numbers for you. You can't fight actual facts.

    For a really clear explanation (0.00 / 0)
of Republicans, their religion of supply-side economics, and the effect this has on our country's politics and financial future, read "The Political Genius of Supply-Side Economics" by Martin Wolf in Financial Times (a British publication).

    Mr. Wolf... (0.00 / 0)
...is astutely correct about the Republicans:

But no, it is not deficits themselves that worry Republicans, but rather how they are caused: deficits caused by tax cuts are fine; but spending increases brought in by Democrats are diabolical, unless on the military.

But I am not convinced the GOP is going to take Congress in November.

    Furthermore... (0.00 / 0)
....if you don't get how Terry's clear attachement to lobbyists and his behavior that is revealed with each story is important, then you just don't get it. Period. End of story. But reality is that people DO care. In a time when more and more have a "throw the bums out" mentality, Lee Terry is showing clear examples WHY this sentiment is out there. Tom White isn't Washington. He's still a state politician and that simple difference can be HUGE to a lot of voters. Showing that Lee Terry throws away the very "values" that he tries to claim for the benefits of getting wined, dined, and God knows what else by lobbyists does have an impact. And the fact he's completely denied this, and it's come out that there are more than one witness....that further erodes his credibility.

    Lisa,
If you think Tom White would be any different, go ahead and vote for him.  He will snuggle up with all the democrat liberal special interest groups and take campaign money from any individual/group as long as its legal.  I'd still rather have a squishy backbencher moderate Republican filling the space than a hardcore "tax and spend" liberal Democrat like Tom White.  As far as the Republicans spending like drunken sailors while they had control back in DC, just ask yourself why I'd dislike Lee Terry so much and you've got your answer.

    [ Parent ]
    You're weird (0.00 / 0)
First off, I can't vote for White. I'm in the 3rd District.

Second, you just made me giggle. You still stick to the assumed/implied "tax and spend" line/lie that the GOP has mainlined into your brain. You have nothing that backs up this with regards to White. But you just know.

But then you know for a FACT that Terry has all kinds of problems with being bought and paid for by lobbyist, and acknowledge that you know he's part of the problem people who spent like drunken sailors.

But you'll support the one you know has sucked big time, but not the one that MIGHT because you've blindly drank the kool aid.

    That's just plain silly.

is Boehner's spokesman really named Michael Steel? That's weird.
