  • Lee Terry Declares Nebraska Republicans "The Party Of The Tea Party"

    by: Kyle Michaelis

Sat Nov 21, 2009 at 18:39:58 PM CST

Parcbench, a website trying very hard to make conservative politics appealing to young voters, did no service to their cause by interviewing Republican Congressman Lee Terry earlier this week.

In between questions about who Terry would have supported between Dede Scozzafava and Doug Hoffman in a New York Congressional race earlier this month ("Scozzafava") and why Republicans fare so poorly in pop culture ("We're not that hip."), the interview also includes the following:

Parcbench: In some areas around the Country there is growing tension between the Tea Party and the GOP. Is there any conflict between the GOP and grassroot activists in Nebraska?

Congressman Terry: The answer to that is no. Our moderates are probably your New York City right wing. Nebraska's GOP is the party of the Tea Party....

Parcbench: [E]veryone's commented on the White House's War on Fox news. What are your thoughts on it?

Congressman Terry: It's extremely disturbing; using the presidency to shut down free speech. Amazing to me the hypocrisy that they stand up and talk about free speech but anyone who shows a different view gets squashed.

Everyone's going to have his or her own reaction to Terry's statement that Nebraska Republicans are "the party of the tea party."  Since I generally perceive "tea parties" as shallow exercises driven by misplaced anger and unreasonable fears - offering no solutions for the problems we face as a country - I tend to agree that's a pretty accurate reflection of the Nebraska Republican Party.

However, giving the tea party folks the benefit of the doubt that they're not all special interest stooges, I could see them being quite offended by Terry's statement.  After all, anyone who genuinely cared about restoring fiscal discipline and getting the federal deficit under control would find nothing to like in Lee Terry's 11 year record of supporting corporate welfare, skyrocketing debt, and tax cuts for the rich.

Terry's placed the burden of these irresponsible policies entirely on the backs of middle-class taxpayers and future generations, while the Nebraska Republican Party cheered every step along the way.  They can pretend they've been reformed but it's just a politically convenient act for a party desperate to regain power.  As independents and moderates have come to realize, "the party of the tea party" is a party to which hypocrites and right-wing fanatics are the only ones who are still invited.

As for Terry's accusation that the Obama White House is trying to "shut down free speech" and "squash" FOX News, it's evident he doesn't know what he's talking about.  Of course, Obama's White House is going to have a somewhat chilly relationship with a so-called news organization dedicated to bringing down his presidency.  The White House has criticized FOX News but taken no action against them.  Obama even appeared on FOX News for an interview earlier this week.

In Nebraska, that's pretty much the equivalent of Lee Terry sitting down for an interview with the New Nebraska Network.  The door's always open, Congressman.  Just say the word.

The NE Republican Party is Not Lee Terry (0.00 / 0)
Lee Terry currently faces a primary challenge from a candidate, Matt Sakalosky, who positions himself as a bedrock conservative more closely aligned with the core beliefs/principles of the "tea baggers".  While Sakalosky hasn't run an effective campaign yet, Terry has little solid support among NE CD2 conservatives.  He has been and will continue to be the lesser of two evils (aka Tom White).  While you liberals/progressives/socialists don't seem capable of understanding the logic of conservatives, you shouldn't be too smug about the tea baggers since almost of your ideals/political agenda appears in all its glory on the American Communist Party website for anyone to see.

    Joe McCarthy is dead. (0.00 / 0)
You're right most of us here believe in peace, equality and democracy.  Those are among the values of the Communist Party of the United States of America.  I don't have a problem sharing those values with them.  Obviously you're so paranoid that you see communists behind every water fountain, and assume you must oppose anything they support.

Joe McCarthy died a disgraced and broken wretch.  If you'd just drop dead and join him the world would probably be a better place.

If you'd just drop dead and join him

I don't care how much you dislike Geouser, but that comment makes you no better than the nut that left a note for me and my husband saying "Jesus would kill you...die or go home". People who proclaim themselves progressives should be better than that.

    Litmus tests. (0.00 / 0)
You're a bit delusional there Lisa.  I'd say the world needs a whole lot more progressives willing to tell right wing nut cases to drop dead.  If the Democrats in Congress had told the Republicans to drop dead months ago we'd be looking at a lot more progressive piece of legislation in the health care bill.

p.s. Was that post just another chance for you to point out that you are a perpetual victim?

    Thank you, Lisa (0.00 / 0)
People who proclaim themselves progressives should be better than that.

There are always going to be trolls.  Don't sink to their level.

NNN will be shut down before it becomes an embarrassment to the causes we share.

"Drop dead" is only a little more strenuous (0.00 / 0)
exhortation of Bug Off or in more unlady like terms the 'F' word off.  Nothing in my opinion to get too excited about.
Get lost, Go play in your own litter box... GeosUser's comments are certainly not progressive and s/he should be regarded as an obstructionist and dealt with accordingly.

If we were to be 'adult' about teabaggers' intrusions on this site, we should totally ignore them.  And I have to admit, for the first and probably the only time, I agree with Lee Terry.  The Nebraska Republicans are the epitome of the teabagger mentality.

    Hipocrite (0.00 / 0)
It is OK for you to make terrible comments about the Hispanic community, but then you turn around and lecture people about how they should act. You are nothing but a hipocrite Lisa. How much more attention are you going to try get out of your doubtful "note" anyway? Get down off of your cross!

    Yeah... (0.00 / 0)
but she's probably a better speller than you.

    That's okay (0.00 / 0)
Darwin, thanks, but I know who nenative is and their opinion means nothing. They've got a lot of other issues and this is how he/she makes him/herself feel better. Hence the reason I told him/her previously I feel pity for him/her. (I'm even respecting the desire to post anonymous by not identifying who nenative is). You can email me sometime, Darwin (anonymously).

    Hypocrite doesn't even cover it. (0.00 / 0)
Lisa, this thread started when I suggested that someone drop dead after they implied that the majority of posters here were communists.  You equated my remark with intolerance and threats to you personally.  Kyle wasted no time jumping on your band wagon.

    You took offense, and have made a major issue of my use of a commonly used phrase.  Kyle was particularly impressed with your assertion;

People who proclaim themselves progressives should be better than that.

When nenative pointed out that you have a history of intolerance that far surpasses my own minor indiscretion, you considered it an opening to attack them in a very personal and INAPROPRIATE way.

They've got a lot of other issues and this is how he/she makes him/herself feel better.

You've gone much farther than I ever did in the way of demonstrating intolerance in that single statement.  Kyle's willingness to ignore it demonstrates his own hypocrisy and lack of objectivity.

When it comes to "issues" your bag is far from empty.  You have a reputation for dismissing and attacking those you view as underlings and inferiors.  You have a unique talent for victimizing others and claiming to be the victim when your actions are criticized.  You'd do a better job of projecting the illusion that you are a progressive if you'd stop acting like such a judgmental tyrant.

    [ Parent ]
    And obviously (0.00 / 0)
The answer to my earlier question is YES your post was just an opportunity to try and get back the spotlight for your persecution complex over the "note" you claim to have received.  If they ever print a victim of the month calendar you'll expect not only to be featured for January through December, you'll want it to cover several decades to make sure you get enough exposure.

How can you know me? We have never met, unless you've been to Ainsworth in the past few years. I've heard about you though. My friends tell me that you are famous for making shit up.

    [ Parent ]
    She doesn't have to know you. (0.00 / 0)
Boss Hannah's style is to operate by intimidation.  Her post was nothing more than an attempt to silence you by threatening to reveal your identity and spread rumors about your personal life.  It's ironic that she wants to be seen as a victim when cowards confront her with anonymous notes, but feels she's justified in intimidating and threatening others who dare to ask her to be accountable for her own actions.  Not only is she a hypocrite and a bully she has some major "issues" with paranoia and a persecution complex.

From her perspective critical posts by others are inappropriate.  Personal attacks on others are her right.

Lisa Hannah might spell better than me, but what does that have to do with what I said? She is still a hypocrite. There - are you happy now?

    The logic of conservatives? (0.00 / 0)
Does that exist?  To be a conservative these days, it seems you need to be:

For personal responsibility, but against accountability

For freedom, but against human rights

For religious pluralism, as long as everyone agrees Christianity is the best one.

Against terrorism, but for invading and occupying Muslim nations(which promotes terrorism)

Against the killing of innoocent humans, but for endless warfare.

Against government waste, fraud and abuse, unless it has anything to do with "national defense".

Against community organizing, unless it's done by conservatives

is sowing hatred towards their political opponents.  Nice.

    Speaking of "conservative logic"... (0.00 / 0)
Can anyone explain this to me?  I be dumm.

Nelson argues that repealing the (health insurance racket's antitrust)exemption wouldn't hurt the big insurers because they're already so big they don't need to collude with each other. Repealing it, he argues, would only hurt the little guys.

    It's easy... (0.00 / 0)
    Nelson thinks Nebraskans are idiots.

    [ Parent ]
    Explanation (0.00 / 0)
Of course Don. It really is quite simple. Repealing the health insurance industry's anti-trust exemption wouldn't hurt the big insurers because they already own enough Representatives, Senators and lobbyists that they can have loopholes written into subsequent laws large enough to float the Oasis of Seas through them with plenty of room to spare. When you get to be that big, you become just like the Mafia. They can lose a tentacle here and there, but they just grow new ones.

Maybe, if and when we are able to reform campaign financing so that filthy rich corporations, PACs, etc. don't get to crush the will of the people, things will change. But I'm not going to hold my breath. After all, the people who are responsible for changing the laws are those that profit the most from the way things are.

Ben is just filling the empty space in front of the microphone with a random assortment of words. Don't pay any attention to what he says. Just do as you are told.
