| There seems to be a pattern forming in the actions of the Nebraskan Republican Party. First, the GOP attacks Senator Ben Nelson for considering public health care as an option to fix our national health care problem; then, Senator Mike Johanns attempted to play down the number of uninsured in America, claiming that there are only 12 million with no access, instead of the widely accepted 47 million uninsured Americans. Finally, Governor Dave Heineman is attempting to use scare tactics with Nebraskans and denying their basic need for a public health insurance option. This pattern points to one thing: the Nebraskan Republican Party is simply out of touch on health care.
By falling back on their usual scare tactics and talking points, the GOP demonstrated their unwillingness to find a real solution to the problem. They believe they can make the problem go away by scaring the public into thinking the only solution is one like Governor Heineman suggested. These tactics being used are simply unacceptable.
On the other hand, Senator Ben Nelson has been leading the way for Nebraskan health care reform. He has been trying to work with members on both sides of the aisle to solve our ongoing health care problem, considering all options, not just the ones that will make the higher-ups in his party happy. We need leaders like him working on this problem - leaders who aren't afraid to go against the norm if it means that the public will be better served. We need leaders who simply want to do the job they were elected for: to serve the people who helped to put them in office.
The Nebraskan Republican Party, and indeed the GOP nationwide, can be leaders like this too. They just need to put down their note cards with their talking points and scare tactics and listen to what the public is saying. By working with others in office, not just those in their party, and putting their efforts to find a solution that works, the Nebraskan Republican Party could become part of the solution, instead of part of the problem. . . working together to help Nebraskans live without the fear of being uninsured.
